Snorkeling on the Big Island

On our trip we had someone very interested in snorkeling, one interested in snorkeling but not a strong swimmer, and a strong swimmer who was a bit of a scaredy-cat . So we set out to try out all the recommended snorkeling spots. Here’s what we learned.

NOTE: The ocean is a changeable thing. Always observe the conditions, notices and warning re weather and ocean conditions. What is a calm and perfect beach for children and non swimmers one day, could be choppy with “rather unsafe,” dangerous waves the next.

Don’t let one bad weather day spoil a perfect beach day for you in the future, and most importantly keep yourselves and your families safe. 🥰

OUR TOP SNORKELING PICK

#1 Choice – Two Step Beach

Two Step beach is NOT a play in the sand for the day type beach. The shoreline is as pictured above right, rocky, HOT in the sun, and uneven. It is, however, THE place to go for snorkeling. We went on one of our first days avid snorkeler and not a strong swimmer snorkeler hopped in and came back amazed at all the fish they saw. Scaredy-cat snorkeler chose to sit this one out. However, scaredy regretted that decision by the end of the day.

The “two step” is, as you might imagine, two natural lava steps that make for easy access into an otherwise difficult to access area. Since the water is protected by rocks, the waves are relatively calm (on both days we were there, but do note my disclaimer about the variable conditions of the ocean). You can see brightly coloured little fishies even from the shore.

Avid snokeler and not a strong swimmer can be seen in the back. Random strangers in forground also enjoying the two step

Scaredy-cat and Avid Snorkeler returned for a second day, and the fish did not disappoint.
