Papakolea Green sand beach is an hour and a half drive to the South tip of the island from Kailua-Kona. Drive straight down Highway 11 and then make a right turn onto South Point Road. You will get almost all the way to the coast and you will see a left turn to go to Green Sand Beach. (It’s a fairly handmade looking sign)
If you miss the turn to the green sand beach, you will find yourself in a different parking lot, one to see the picturesque South Point. Lovely view. Was VERY windy when I was there FYI.
Head back up the South Point Road and this time turn right to the green sand beach. You can park and walk the 3 miles to the beach. Bring a hat and some water. There is no shade on your walk to the beach.
Not into the hike? They have shuttles (pickup truck you stand in the back of) I believe the price was $15 one-way. It’s a bit wild, but fun. They will take you to the green sand beach.
Once you’ve had your fill of the beach, hop back on the shuttle and back to the parking lot. Now I bet you are ready for some snacks!
Jump in the jeep and start making your way up South Point Road back to Highway 11. Paradise Meadows Orchard and Bee farm has plenty of signs before the turnoff. Look for them on the left-hand side of South Point Road, just before you get back onto Highway 11. They offer local coffee tasting, honey and mac nuts tastings, and the best part is it’s free.
Their caramel crunch mac nuts are to DIE FOR
Taste/purchase to your heart’s content, and view their local art gallery and tropical birds. Then wander your way back to the Kona House.
Not done adventuring for the day? Head further east on Highway 11 for 30 minutes and you’re in Volcano National Park
